Pass on the Gas and Improve Diet
Having a french bulldog companion is awesome! But one of the things that I often here from french bulldogs owners is how their frenchies of "break wind". They would love to Pass on the Gas! Not to hand it off of course but to reduce the frequency in which their companions pass gas.
As a french bulldog breeder we have found that just like people each french bulldog is unique; some french bulldogs are inclined to pass gas more than others. In our home our frenchies very rarely break wind! This is not to say that it was always that way, after all in the beginning their was gas as we worked on understanding of our frienchies dietary needs.
Before we begin discussing what has helped our french bulldog family, I think that covering the basics on what to avoid in your dogs diet is essentially. French bulldogs should avoid the following components in their diet:
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
These ingredient are common found in mass produced kibble. The French Bulldog Club of America (FBCA) also recommends that all frenchies avoid the following:
Any foods with artificial preservatives. According to the Whole Dog Journal, many mass-produced commercial dog foods have artificial preservatives in them but find ways to avoid putting those ingredients on the label!
Wheat and corn.
WARNING: French bulldogs are allergic to corn and wheat causes excessive gas.
From my experience fillers and certain proteins (i.e beef kibble) can also contribute to frequent passing of gas.
You may be asking your self "So what can I feed my french bulldog?" A french bulldog diet should contain whole meats as a primary ingredient. French bulldogs love whole meats like lamb, fish (salmon is common in Frenchie diets), beef or chicken.
KIBBLE (MODERATE COST & CONVENIENT & NUTRITIOUS)
For those of you that would like to offer all of these essentials to your dog from a single bag, I would highly recommend Nutro Ultra Holistic Superfood Blend which contains the perfect mix of premium lean proteins, plant-based proteins, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy oils (i.e.Omega-3s) . I will often combine kibble with raw meats in a 80/20 (ground beef or Turkey) ratio every other week. Lyric and Rocco will try to avoid the kibble in these instances, so I have to ground the kibble and mix with the raw meats. The whole grains in this brands does not effect my dogs by causing excessive gas. Lyric passes wind infrequently as does Rocco.
Other great kibble options include Fromm, Ketona, and Blue brand. These products can be found through our pet supply store at www.lyrics-french-bullies.com. You can also follow the link to our store from our homepage!
RAW DIET (MODERATE COST & REQUIRES MORE TIME & NUTRITIOUS & MORE DIET CONTROL)
Some people prefer a raw Frenchie diet that includes some bones, plus raw meats like liver, kidney, beef or chicken. You can include your own plant-based foods like apples or sweet potatoes. This is a more expensive option but if done right is just as good as kibble. I feed our french bulldogs raw meats, fruits, and vegetables as treat 50% of the time and store bought dog treats the other 50%. Store bought dog treats can be high in calories and artificial preservatives, which is why I give treats in this manner. You find healthy and safe raw meats on our website at www.lyrics-french-bullies.com. We can special order meats for you as well. Just tell us what your interest are!
Here is a raw diet recipe that you may like:
French Bulldog Raw Diet Recipe
1 1/2 cups raw chopped meat
1/2 cup vegetable/fruit blend (use a blender to break them down and make it easier for your Frenchie to digest)
2 teaspoons fish oil
Vitamin/mineral supplement, as directed on the product
Mix the above ingredients together.
Store in your freezer until you're ready to feed your bulldog.
Over the weeks, alternate the types of meat you use. For example, one week you might use chicken, and another week you might use lamb.
It's also important to use a vitamin and mineral supplement to fill any nutritional gaps in your raw ingredients. Look for one that contains a wide range of whole foods-based ingredients that provide a spectrum of nutrients. For example, the Better in the Raw for Dogs food supplement derives its minerals from beef liver, kelp (a great source of magnesium) and parsley (high in vitamin K).
PRE-PREPARED ( MORE EXPENSIVE & NUTRITIOUS & MORE CONTROL OF DIET)
This is another great option for controlling what is in your french bullie dog diet. While we haven't use this option ourselves we have done enough research and can say that Ollie brand dog food is a good option and is rate the #1 brand of personalized and cooked dogs food, espcially if your frenchie has sensitive skin or eyes.
Sourced from family-run farms in the US and Australia
